Poetic Devices in Poetry

Poetry has emotion, imagery, significance, beauty, dignity, rhythm, sometimes rhyme, a different arrangement which can include inversion, and concreteness in its images.

One way to attain the qualities so essential to making words poetic is through the use of poetry devices. We won't begin to cover all the known poetic devices or terms. Rather we'll discuss and use some of the more commonly known and used ones.

White Changing Tab

Below are the more commonly used poetic devices and terms. Hopefully, with the examples given, everyone can better understand some of the ways to make poetry, well, more poetic. The examples used are my own poetry and are copyrighted in my name.

Poetry devices (a major sampling):

alliteration: the repetition of a beginning sound.

Rain reigns roughly through the day.

Raging anger from the sky

Partners prattle of tormented tears

From clouds wondering why

Lightning tears their souls apart.

In the first two lines, the r sound is repeated. In the third line p starts two adjoining words.

allusion: a casual reference to someone or something in history or literature that creates a mental picture.

A Common Woman

No Helen of Troy she,

Taking the world by war,

But a woman in plain paper wrapped

With a heart of love untapped,

She waits, yearning for her destiny

Whether it be a he on a charger white

Or one riding behind a garbage truck.

Perhaps instead a room of students

Lurks in the shadows of her life

Needing her interest to be shown.

Yet other concerns may call

No, no Helen of Troy she,

But a woman set the world to tame

Wherever she may be.

Helen of Troy brings to mind a woman so beautiful that two countries went to war over her.

analogy: the comparison of two things by explaining one to show how it is similar to the other.

Day's Journey

The day dawns as a journey.

First one leaves the station on a train,

Rushing past other places

Without a pause or stop,

Watching faces blur through the window,

No time to say goodbye.

On and on the train does speed

Until the line's end one sees,

Another sunset down

Without any lasting memories.

The whole poem creates analogy, the comparison of a day and a train journey.

caesura: the pausing or stopping within a line of poetry caused by needed punctuation.

Living, breathing apathy

Saps energy, will, interest,

Leaving no desire to win.

All that's left are ashes,

Cinders of what might have been.

The punctuation within the lines (in this case, all commas) are the caesura, not the punctuation at the ends of the lines.

enjambement: the continuation of thought from one line of poetry to the next without punctuation needed at the end of the previous line(s).

Looking through the eyes

Of wonder, of delight,

Children view their world

With trust, with hope

That only life will change.

Enjambement is found at the end of lines 1, 3, and 4 because punctuation was not needed in those places.

hyperbole: extreme exaggeration for effect.

Giants standing tall as mountains

Towering over midgets

Bring eyes above the common ground

To heights no longer small.

Arms of tree trunks wrap

In comfort gentle, softness

Unthought of due to size,

Yet welcomed in their strength.

Giants aren't really tall as mountains, nor are arms tree trunks, but the use of the exaggeration helps create the image wanted.

metaphor: the comparison of two unlike things by saying one is the other.

Sunshine, hope aglow,

Streams from heaven's store

Bringing smiles of warming grace

Which lighten heavy loads.

Clouds are ships in full sail

Racing across the sky-blue sea.

Wind fills the cotton canvas

Pushing them further away from me.

In the first stanza, sunshine is compared to hope while in the second, clouds are compared to ships.

metonymy: the substitution of a word for one with which it is closely associated.

Scandals peep from every window,

Hide behind each hedge,

Waiting to pounce on the unwary,

As the White House cringes in dismay.

White House is used in place of the President or the government, and readers understand what is meant without exactly who is being directly addressed.

onomatopoeia: the sound a thing makes

Roaring with the pain

Caused by flashing lightning strikes,

Thunders yells, "Booooom! Craaaashhhh! Yeow!"

Then mumbles, rumbling on its way.

Grrrr, the lion's cry echoes

Through the jungle's den

Causing creatures small

To scurry to their holes.

Roaring, rumbling, cry are not examples of onomatopoeia, but are verb forms. Boooom, craaaashhh, yeow, and grrrrr are examples of onomatapoeia.

oxymoron: the use of contradictory terms (together) for effect.

Freezing heat of hate

Surrounds the heart

Stalling, killing kindness,

Bringing destruction to the start.

Freezing and heat are contradictory, opposites, yet the two together create a mental image.

personification: the giving of human traits to non-human things incapable of having those traits.

Anger frowns and snarls,

Sending bolts of fire from darkest night

That bring no brilliance,

Rather only added blackness of sight.

Frowning and snarling are human traits that anger cannot experience; however using them as traits for anger creates the imagery needed.

simile: the comparison of two unlike things by saying one is like or as the other.

Sunshine, like hope aglow,

Streams from heaven's sky

Bringing smiles of warming grace

On breeze whispers like a sigh.

Clouds are like ships in full sail

Racing across the sky-blue sea.

Wind fills the cotton canvas

Pushing them further away from me.

These two stanzas of poetry and those for metaphor are nearly identical. Both metaphor and simile are comparisons of unlike things, but metaphor states one thing is the other while simile says one is like the other, or as the other.

symbol: something which represents something else besides itself.

The dove, with olive branch in beak,

Glides over all the land

Searching for a place to light.

Storms of war linger on every hand,

Everywhere the hawk does fight.

The dove is a symbol of peace, and the hawk is a symbol of war. Using them in poetry gives an image without having to explain in detail.

Other terms:

elegy: a poem of lament (extreme sorrow, such as caused by death)

free verse: a poem without either a rhyme or a rhythm scheme, although rhyme may be used, just without a pattern.

blank verse: un-rhymed lines of iambic pentameter (ten syllables with all even numbered syllables accented)

imagery: the use of words to create a mental picture

mood: the emotional effect of a poem or a story

Understanding and using these devices and terms can help improve and strengthen poetry. Imagery is essential for vivid poetry, and devices help develop imagery.

A changing table consists of a flat surface designed to comfortably hold your child while you change them. It is also designed to keep your child securely in place during the procedure. To be able to use your changing table with confidence and ease, below are some tips abridged from Heather B's on-line buying guide for Baby Changing Tables: These comes in a variety of styles and configurations. Before deciding on the type, consider other features you would like your changing table to have; would you want all drawers or a combination of drawers and cubbies? Perhaps a cabinet-style changing table? If you are hesitant about buying a changing table because of its short life span, consider the type that can be repurposed as a dresser or storage chest. Safety straps, also referred to as restraining straps, are typically part of the changing pad. They provide additional protection from your child rolling away from you or falling. While most changing pads come with these straps, some may be provided as a separate purchase. Always use safety straps and keep one hand on your child at all times for added support. It is advisable to register your changing table with its manufacturer. In the event of any product recalls, they will be able to notify you first hand. eBay Selling, Use the Completed Listings Tab to Do Research on Your Competitors

When selling on eBay, it is hard to find any kind of "niche" market. With the Marketplace being such a behemoth these days and people selling anything from dryer lint to high end automobiles, it is hard to find anything that isn't being sold online. However, it is still possible to find those categories, that even with ton of items listed for sale, aren't being sold and auctioned correctly or simply do not have enough listings or a big variety of items to sell well. These are the markets to find product for. Sometimes when deciding what to sell, it can help to start with simple research and launch a new product that you know will sell well making sure to guarantee success for your start up eBay business.

When entering a keyword into the search box on eBay's homepage and performing a search for an item, a left hand navigation screen will appear beside the items for sale for that search. When scrolling down the page to about the middle section, you will notice a section on this left hand navigation bar with the title in light orange "Search Options". Under this category it has an option with a checkbox next to it "Completed listings". If you place a check in this box by clicking on it and then at the bottom of this same search options category click on the white button "Show Items", it will take you to the completed listings for this search for the last 90 days.

White Changing Tab

eBay keeps a record on their site for the last 90 days of all listings that have ended including auctions, fixed price or store inventory product. This is an invaluable tool for anyone looking to sell on this marketplace or for anyone who is currently selling. I have been selling online for more than 10 years and I still use this feature for completed listings at least once a month. The data that it provides is as good as any traffic or sales report that I receive weekly.

When selling anything whether online or retail locally, it is extremely important to understand and to know as much as possible about your competition. Your competitors may be changing and growing as rapidly as your own online business and you need to know what is working and not working for them. My eBay Store, Sit On This Ergonomics, is constantly updating as we add new product, make price changes and tailor our ads and text to better suite our product. Each change that we make has a direct effect on our business and how our customers purchase from us.

Any good entrepreneur knows how important it is to stay ahead of the game and educating yourself on your direct competitors can help you to do this. Using the completed listings tabs can allow you to search by price, time or type of listing to even better tailor your research results to what you need for your type of item. Looking for how many of these items actually ended with buyers, how many items sold without any bids or clicks, how many categories are oversaturated with listings, or what price these items ended with are all important for a decision on whether or not to choose that item to sell online.

Knowing the price that the item sells for can be the most important and I recommend when using the button for completed listings to use the pull down menu to sort the items by highest or lowest price to really see the range of prices better and to determine if you can even compete with the low prices found everyday online. On the eBay marketplace, items are sold at a far reduced rate from normal retail price. It is estimated that unless you can find an item with a price that is at least 60% below current retail value, you shouldn't waste your time, because someone is already selling it on eBay for this low discount price.

It also helps to know if the price is low enough. Sometimes a product will show up with a lot of listings and yet no one is actually buying when you get down to the nitty gritty. Putting product out there online is different from actually selling it. You need to have a price low enough to have it sell now and keep it selling for a while to make it online. Using this tab can help you to do research needed to find out what the competitors are doing and how the product is selling in order to sell smart and sell well on the eBay marketplace.

Ukulele Tabs - Learn To Play Clementine

In this ukulele lesson you will learn to play an easy American melody. You will not need to know sheet music but instead you will learn to use easy ukulele tab notation. I will show you how to put your fingers on your ukulele!

Ukulele tablature will help you to put your fingers on the right frets in order to play a melody or something else on your ukulele. The ukulele tab notation I will use in this lesson are based on numbers. Every note is represented by two numbers. The first number telling you which fret to play and the second number indicating the string.

White Changing Tab

We will start with the first line of lyrics and the corresponding ukulele tablature notation:

In a cavern, in a canyon

12 12 12 03 01 01 01 12

12 means, play the first fret on the second string. The strings are numbered from the string with the highest pitch which will be the bottom string when you play. 03 means that you play the open third string, that is, play the third string without pressing down a fret.

Let us continue with the melody:

excavating for a mine

12 01 31 31 11 01 32

Try to use your left hand index finger to play the notes on the first fret, your middle finger for the notes on the second fret and your ring finger for the third fret. This will maybe feel a bit awkward at first but will help you a lot when you get used to it.

Time for the next line of lyrics

Dwelt a miner, forty-niner

32 01 11 11 01 32 01 12

And his daughter Clementine

12 01 32 03 02 32 12

In the refrain you will use the same melody so you only need to repeat the melody above. I will notate the melody for your convenience:

Oh my darling, oh my darling

12 12 12 03 01 01 01 12

Oh my darling, Clementine

12 01 31 31 11 01 32

Thou art lost and gone forever

32 01 11 11 01 32 01 12

Dreadful sorry, Clementine

12 01 32 03 02 32 12

I guess the best way to learn this melody on your ukulele is to practice one line at a time, learning it by heart.

If you are interested in learning two easy chords that you can use if you want to sing the melody or play it together with someone else I suggest that you use the F-major chord and C7 chord. I will show you the chords by using the same notation as I used previously. The only difference is that you are to strum the four notes after the chord name:

F-major: 24 03 12 01

C7: 04 03 02 11

You can start with the F-major chord as you sing the lyrics and change to C7 when you come to the word "mine". Then you change back to F-major when you come to "tine" in Clementine.

The name of the chords depends on how you tune your ukulele but this does not matter as long as you do not play together with other instruments. If you want to tune your ukulele according to the chord names your first string should be an A, your second string an E, the third string a C and the fourth string a G.

When you play the chords you can use the same fingerings that I mentioned for the melody. If you could find someone else to play ukulele together with you I guess you will have a nice time!

Whiten Your Teeth and Improve First Impressions - At Home Teeth Bleaching Trick

If you want a good reason to whiten your teeth, here are several. Your teeth put on a show everyday. They show the world how well you take care of them; the show off how confident, happy, outgoing, or pleasant you are. They even show off how sexy or mischievous you might feel. With all the impressions that your teeth give off in a single day, why would you want anything less than bright, white teeth?

Whitening your teeth is easier than ever thanks to advances in technology over the past ten to fifteen years. It's quite common today for a dentist to be performing cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening, in addition to their regular practice. While visiting the dentist might seem like a natural first option, there is something important you should consider: cost. Just a single session with the dentist can run you a tab of several hundred dollars. To add salt to the wound, so to speak, dental insurance policies almost never cover these costs. This means you'll have to cover it out-of-pocket.

White Changing Tab

A better alternative is to pick up an at-home teeth-whitening kit. These kits are much, much easier to afford while at the same time, they are just as effective at brightening your smile. Plus, they're easy when it comes to maintenance sessions - simply pick up an extra kit or two to store in the bathroom.

When searching for an at-home teeth-whitening kit, try to find one that uses trays in order to whiten your smile. Trays are sturdier, and provide an all-over, more even white smile than strips, or other forms do.

With all of the signals and impressions your teeth and smile give off on daily basis, can you really afford not to have a smile that helps you put your best food forward?

Whiten Your Teeth and Improve First Impressions - At Home Teeth Bleaching Trick

See how an at-home teeth whitening can instantly make your smile 7 shades brighter.

Microsoft Word 2007 Ribbon Controls

The controls in each Tab of the Word 2007 Ribbon are organised into groups. For example in the home Tab we have Clipboard, Font, Paragraph, Styles and Editing. As always in Microsoft applications, hovering over a control displays a tool-tip. In the case of Office 2007, these tool-tips are quite extensive: they contain a description of how the control works, what it does and the keyboard shortcut which is equivalent to that control. There are basically three types of controls: buttons drop-down menus and launchers. The Bold control is an example of a simple button: when you click the button, highlighted text becomes bold.

If you click the Bold button again, the highlighted text reverts to normal. The change case-control is an example of a drop-down menu: clicking the control shows you a series of options. For example, if you select some text and choose "Uppercase", the highlighted text becomes capitalised. If you choose "Capitalise Each Word" only the first letter in each word is capitalised. Some controls are a combination of both simple buttons and drop-down menus. One example is Underline. When you hover over the underlying button, it consists of two sections: a button on the left and a drop-down menu on the right. If you click on the button, the default underline is applied, the underline style which was last used. If you click on the drop-down menu, you are given a series of options for customising the underline. You can change of style: solid, dotted and so forth.

White Changing Tab

You can also change the colour. As with the Bold button, if you click a second time, the underline is removed. Launchers are buttons which are displayed in the bottom right of some groups. Clicking the Launcher button displays a series of options either in a task pane or, more typically, a dialog box. For example, in the Home Tab, the Clipboard Launcher options are displayed within a task pane window, whereas the Font Launcher options are displayed in a dialog box.The Microsoft Word Ribbon takes up quite a lot of screen space (approximately 20% of the average screen).

If this becomes inconvenient you can minimise the Ribbon at any time. To do this, simply double-click on the name of any Tab. When the ribbon is minimised, it can still be used: simply click on the name of a Tab and the options will appear once more. When you have chosen an option, the ribbon will be minimised again.A second way of minimising the Ribbon is to go to the Quick Access Toolbar and choose "Minimise the Ribbon". To cause the Ribbon to revert to its normal size, use exactly the same options used to minimise it.

Change Your Tab Colors in Excel

After speaking with many people who use Microsoft Excel on a daily basis, most of them did not know that you can actually change the color of the tab.

The tabs are those items that distinguish worksheets within Excel. If you are not sure what a worksheet is then this article will more than likely be more advanced than what you need right now. I recommend checking out some sites on the basics of Excel before continuing.

White Changing Tab

Being able to color code your worksheet tabs can help you further organize your entire workbook making it easier to find information when you need it most. The steps are very simple.

You can do it a couple of ways. The first way which is what I find to be the easiest is to right click with your mouse on the tab that you want to change the color of. This will bring up what is called a pop up menu. In the pop up menu that is an option called "Tab Color". You'll never guess what that is for? OK maybe you will.

Click on the sub menu item labeled "Tab Color". This brings up a color palette where you can choose the color that you want. Select the color that you desire and then finally click the ok button.

At first glance it looks as if nothing has happened. However if you click off of that worksheet by left clicking a different tab, you will then see your new tab color. Just remember that a white tab always represents the active tab that you are working on.

The second way to change the tab color has a couple of more steps but the end result will still be the same. This is very typical of any Microsoft product which is the ability to do one thing in a variety of ways.

Up at the top of the Excel window you will see the main menu header. Click the header menu item that is labeled, "Format". When you do this a sub menu appears. You will see an item in the sub menu labeled "Sheet". Click that sub menu item. That brings up yet another sub menu. You will notice in this third menu an option that is labeled "Tab Color". When you click on this third menu item it will bring up the color palette as it did in the previous example. Everything hereafter is identical.

You can see that the second approach adds a couple more steps but the end result is still the same. Which way you do it is completely up to you.
